Judges 2017

The Panel of Judges for the 2017 Broadbean National Online Recruitment Awards. As usual they have extensive experience of the current online recruitment sector. They are selected on the basis of this knowledge, and have no vested interested in the nominated websites. A separate consulting panel of industry experts are involved in producing the shortlist of Finalist sites, from the thousands of nominations we receive via NORAuk.com.

The Judging Panel



Founder of PC Evaluate, RECex, and the National Online Recruitment Awards. Stephen has been a professional recruiter for the last 30 years, and has owned and run successful recruitment companies since 1993.  PC Evaluate provides personality profiling services to employers throughout the UK.

Stephen O’Donnell is Chairman of the Judging Panel.


Neil Morrison HR Director at Severn Trent plc, was until recently Group HR Director for Penguin Random House UK, the world’s largest general book publishing company. A member of the CIPD with 20 years experience in generalist and specialist HR roles, including time spent leading resourcing teams. Neil is also an experienced HR blogger and sector commentator.


Lisa Scales recently exited as the Co- Founder of Tribepad, the multi-award winning next generation recruitment platform used to great effect by some of the world’s largest employers.



Steve-Othen-Bio-Picture70x70Steve Othen is the Head of HR at the REC. Steve has held various roles, including Corporate Membership Manager, Organisational Change Manager, Head of Service Delivery and Acting Director of Member Delivery. Steve assumed his current position of Head of Strategic Projects in July 2013 and manages, among other projects, the Good Recruitment Campaign and has shared responsibility for internal HR.



Emma has over 16 years resourcing experience encompassing in-house and agency recruitment as well as RPO. Emma is also Co-Founder of The FIRM (The Forum for In-house Recruitment Managers) a membership organisation for Talent Acquisition professionals. With over 8500 members The FIRM is a collaborative and supportive community that aims to support, develop and inspire its members.



Melanie Hayes is Resourcing & Development Director at Compass Group for Compass Group UK & Ireland. Compass Group UK & Ireland employs 60,000 people in the UK, across 10,000 sites. Melanie’s background is predominantly in Recruitment where she has delivered change programmes to implement direct sourcing models in a number of organisations.



Bethan Davies; with over 16 years of Executive Search and In-house Talent Acquisition experience, three times winner of the UK Candidate Experience Awards Bethan recently moved into the consulting field advising and leading multi-national Talent Acquisition teams on system upgrades, candidate experience and resourcing strategies.



Steve Barnhurst is the Sales Director for our awards partner, Broadbean Technology, and has been a NORA judge for several years. He has Over 20 years experience working within the recruitment sector as a recruiter, Trainer, COO and more recently, a supplier to the industry.



CEO at Social Talent (www.socialtalent.co) Online Recruitment Training, Johnny has extensive hands-on recruitment experience over the past 17 years.



Barry Flack is a seasoned Global HR Executive, leader and strategist. He solves complex people-related business problems. Successes include helping build successful people strategies for a hyper-growth start-up, launching a Retail brand in the USA and offshoring FS processes to India to name a few.




Bill Boorman is the founder of #truMunity., facilitating unconferences globally, in and around Recruiting & HR. Recruiter Trainer. Key-Note Speaker.  Formerly Director of Training with Primetime Recruitment, Bill has been at the forefront of the charge to shape Social Media Recruitment in the UK.

Shortlisting Panel

In advance of the judging stage, we have a Selection Panel of industry experts, who will assess all websites nominated by jobseekers, and produce our shortlist of Finalists.  To ensure transparency in the awards process, this group are quite separate from our Judging Panel, but just as vital to the NORAs.

She is founder and director of UKRecruiter.co.uk which, via its web site and newsletter, provides comprehensive and independent information to the recruitment industry.  Louise has been involved with the NORAs since the beginning, and is the Vice-Chair of our Judging Panel.


MattAlder70Matt Alder is a strategic consultant focusing on all aspects of recruitment marketing, employer brand and recruitment technology. Over the last eighteen years Matt has driven value for numerous employers by helping them connect to the best talent and improve ROI. Matt is a long established blogger, an experienced keynote speaker and regular commentator on the future of work. He hosts the Recruiting Future podcast (www.rfpodcast.com.) and is co-author of the book “Exceptional Talent” which was published by Kogan Page in 2017.


Adam Gordon is the founder and CEO of Candidate ID. Candidate.ID® is the world’s only dedicated talent pipeline software (one of the 10 most disruptive technologies in HR, 2016) and can reduce time-to-shortlist by 60%. Adam has been in the recruiting sector since 1999.

Joanne is also a Recruiter in Residence at Wayra UK the Telefonica Open Future accelerator for startup companies.


Hung Lee is the founder of WorkShape.io – the revolutionary recruiting platform for Software engineers. He is an industry professional with over 15 years experience as an agency recruiter, Recruitment manager, Internal Head of Talent, recruitment trainer and strategic advisor for rapid growth businesses in the London Tech Startup scene. Now CEO of an award winning online recruiting platform WorkShape.io, Hung has been at the forefront in developing and promoting new ways in which companies can connect to talent.



Wendy McDougall CEO Firefish Software. Serial Entrepreneur, making waves and influencing the recruitment technology space. Over the last 20 years, Wendy has been a top performing recruiter, started, grown and been part of several successful company exits. She is now on a mission to help recruiters reach, engage and recruit more candidates by adopting a new and innovative approach called #predictiverecruitment.




Christine is the Co-founder and Director of The Needle, one of the UK’s leading video interview platforms. Christine has spent the last 10 years working in the UK interim recruitment market (Hays Procurement, Badenoch & Clark) as well as launching The Needle’s cloud-based, video interview service, designed to help agency and in-house recruiters to screen and assess candidates using the latest in mobile and browser based video interviewing technologies.


Since 2009, Katrina Collier has been showing SMEs to global Corporates around the world how to source their staff on social media; transforming HR & Recruiters into Certified Searchologists. London UK based, Katrina is a social recruiting specialist; a global trainer and keynote speaker, sharing proven techniques gained from over a decade of full cycle recruitment and social recruiting experience.


Formerly Marketing Director with Bullhorn and Broadbean Technology, Clair is now co-founder of Talent Stories. Talent Stories is a marketing consultancy and concierge service for the recruitment industry. Clair has been a phenomenally successful marketeer in the recruitment sector since 2006.

The criteria to be used in judging will include:

1. Ease of use, design, layout & speed.

2. Volume of available vacancies.

3. Volume of claimed visitors, where applicable.

4. Available facilities for jobseekers. This will include the availability of mobile websites and applications, and integration with social media channels.

5. Prominence in targeted market.

Sites will be judged from the point of view of a jobseeker, and what benefits candidates best. Recruitment websites which are not mobile friendly on small screens, will not be considered.
